Our survey in 2019 estimated 40% of graduate students do not have counseling services included in their insurance benefits. Additionally, many that do have mental health insurance listed barriers of providers in small communities being connected to their PhD programs resulting in them not feeling comfortable using in-network providers. Also, our APA ethics code encourages pro bono work. Setting an example of self-care and support during training can reduce stigma that psychologists face and is an investment in future Clinical Psychologists.

The number of sessions or length of time that you see the graduate student is decided between the individual psychologist and the student. It is recommended that you have an upfront discussion at the time of the first session as to whether you will be working with the graduate student for a predetermined amount of time (e.g., 3 months, 6 months, or X number of sessions), if you will hold periodic re-evaluation discussions, or if it is an ongoing and open-ended situation.

Telehealth can save graduate students commuting time, which can be a valuable time saver with their busy schedules. Additionally, some graduate students may feel more comfortable with confidential services with individuals outside of their local community as this was one of the major barriers in our 2019 needs assessment.

You should have taken at least 1 CE credit for telehealth. Be aware of risks and benefits of telehealth. Have a safety plan in place with local resources which is developed during the first session. Also obtain the information for an emergency contact person to involve in treatment if needed.

In accordance with the APA Ethics Code, follow procedures for providing referrals.

Select the region your office is based in. You can see graduate students outside of your region via telehealth. Some graduate students may prefer to see someone outside of their region.

The number of sessions or length of time that you see the psychologist is decided between the individual psychologist and student. We recommend that the psychologist have an upfront conversation with the student in the first session.

Graduate students are not asked to register or provide any information on this website, unless using the optional “Contact us” form. PSPIT is only interested in knowing global information in order to support and grow the program – such as how many graduate students are utilizing pro bono services, and how many pro bono hours are provided in a given year. Any utilization information will be collected only by providers in the network without any identifying information of graduate students.

First, make sure you mentioned PSPIT in your email or phone call. Second, if you emailed, follow up by phone and leave a voicemail mentioning PSPIT. It may take up to a week to hear back from a busy provider. If you still do not hear back, email info@pspit.org and a board member will help facilitate a connection between you to an available provider.
